VINTAGE TREASURES AT BUTLERS EMPORIUM

Butlers Emporium Vintage StoreA vintage collector with a stylists eye, my dear friend Rose is the owner of Butlers Emporium in Hasting Old Town ( I used to work there), some of you have visited on your travels to East Sussex – (one lovely lady popped in on her travels to Paris from Japan to collect a mirror I had written about!) the huge old shop used to be a hardware store and iron mongers before Rose filled it with beautiful things collected and gathered from the UK and beyond.Vintage Fabric StoreWhat you won’t have seen in the store is her amazing collection of other things that until now have been sleeping in boxes and drawers waiting for a time when one can part with such treasure knowing it will go to good homes and be transformed into amazing things. I have been helping Rose compile and curate these treasures for her new Etsy Store – with much oohing and ahhing, some gasps and lots of smiles as we unfold beautiful vintage fabrics and rolls of lace, gold thread and ribbons galore.Vintage laceVintage floral fabricMost of the items are one of a kind, vintage haberdashery ribbons, millinery flowers and leaves, floral fabrics that will break your heart and bits and bobs to embellish your own creations. THINGS TO TRY AND DIY’S FOR SPRING

Spring fun for indoors and outI am absolutely loving Spring this year, possibly more than I ever have before, could it be because I have a garden that is slowly waking up? Maybe it is also something to do with coming out of the other side of all the rain and gales with our roof still attached (just), anyway today is not so bright out there, but I can’t complain – it’s been so beautiful the last couple of weeks. We have been out and about, weeding and tidying, so I thought I would share some green inspired things from around the web today.

From top left clockwise – make your own seed packets ready for gathering at the end of the flowering season with this super sweet DIY from We Made this Home, protect growing seedlings from the elements and animals with these easy seedling hot houses by Sweet Paul, Propagate succulents using honey as root hormone with this how to by Do it Darling and when you are all finished nurturing your garden, get in the kitchen and whip up some Cambodian Noodle Soup with Tofu & Lemongrass Green Kitchen Stories style.

HEAVENLY SCENTS FOR HOME BODY AND SOUL

Beautiful white and rustic bathroomIf you love a beautifully scented home and prefer natural products then you’ll wanna keep reading, working from home most days means I have to find a balance between work, play, renovations and chores, and being out here in the sticks I find it easy to be here for a several days at a time without leaving, not even to go out into the garden when it’s cold and dull!

Finding time to relax and unwind away from the floors that are being ripped up or all that dust from sanding is essential. When we are finished demolition and decorating a bathroom like the one featured here will have hopefully been achieved. A little rustic and worn but a clean and tranquil place to hide and relax (this is how it feels in our bathroom at the moment but without the super cute wall sconces!). So while Dean is at work an indulgent mid afternoon bath is sometimes called for - with no one bursting in to wash out a paint roller or tip a pail of water down the toilet!Heavenly Organic scents for you and your homeNow – our bathroom is far from beautiful, (ignore the buckets and cleaning products that have no cupboard to hide in) I am talking floor to ceiling pale peach marbled tiles with a green tile border half way up, to distract me from this – I like to surround myself with the best scented candles, open up the windows so I can hear the birds singing and then close my eyes.

Always on the hunt for the perfect scented candle and cruelty free beauty products I was happily introduced to Neom Luxury Organics recently by one of their lovely girls and I tried out a couple of the products, firstly the Complete Bliss: Moroccan Blush Rose candle, with Rose, a little Black Pepper and Lime – as I had hoped it filled the bathroom with its beautiful scent while I took my bath and then I placed it next to the bed where I like to keep it burning in the evenings.Heavenly Organic scents for you and your homeThe second thing I tried was the - Real Luxury – Body Scrub. They call it the ‘cashmere blanket’ of their scent library – a sophisticated but light and calming scent of Jasmine combined with French lavender and the soothing, spicy tones of Brazilian Rosewood. I like a scrub to be super savage and this does not disappoint, the organic sugar base gives your skin a good roughing up and the mix of finest oils and pure essential oils make it a real pampering, skin smoothing treat after all that abuse, I love the delicate scent it leaves on my skin, a definite keeper. Those peach tiles are but a faded distant memory now.

Investigating further I have found Room Mists and a lovely Bath and Shower Oil that I cannot wait to try next. These will definitely be products I will use all around my home. I think the Refresh - Sicilian Lemon & Fresh Basil or Invigorate - Grapefruit, Bergamot & Lime will be motivating and clean scents to use in our home office/studio when it is finished. I am so super happy to have been introduced to Neom, I hope you will be too if you try them out!

BRIGHT AND SUNNY SPRING JEWELLERY BOX DIY

Painted Jewellery Box ProjectHello Wednesday people, how are you? We have been enjoying the sunshine here, although it seems to have disappeared for now, so that means I don’t feel guilty about abandoning the garden chores to settle inside at my table and make something pretty. This week I have been repurposing an old cigar box into a place to keep all my favourite jewellery.Liberty Fabric Jewellery Box ProjectPainted Jewellery Box ProjectI have been wanting to decorate a box like this ever since I saw Artemis’s lovely treasure box back in 2011 (only a bit slow then). So when we discovered this old cigar box in the shed that came with our house – filled with old pencils and charcoal I thought it would be the perfect thing!Liberty Fabric Jewellery Box ProjectWith quite an addiction to buying paint tester pots I have a fair few to choose from, so I selected these happy and bright colours from Little Greene - and with the home office near completion I obviously needed more? So a dash of ’Black Jack’ and a splash of ‘Leather’ (bright Pink) were thrown into the mix and added to my burgeoning collection. Liberty Fabric Jewellery Box ProjectLiberty Fabric Jewellery Box ProjectThis is my side of the bed temporarily splashed with colour as it was too dark to photograph in the dressing room. The husband will be home later and wonder what the hell happened to our pale and tranquil bedroom – never you mind, the anglepoises will be replaced before you know it and the floral pillowcase is going back in the cupboard love!Painted Jewellery Box ProjectSo if you would like to make a box like this for your treasures above it what you’ll need. To get started there needs to be a box! Once you have that just clean it off and paint in your favourite colours, I went mad for bright yellow, green, pink and a black lid. I made the scalloped edge by measuring the centre front and drawing around a cotton reel with pencil then filling it in with pink paint.

Let your paint is dry – I did a few coats to cover up the varnished brown beneath and made a few colour changes along the way – the lid went from yellow to pink and eventually ended up black. Luckily the Liberty fabric I chose for inside is ablaze with colours to highlight galore.

When it is all dry you could give it a spray over with a clear matt lacquer just to keep the paint from wearing off (I forgot to add that to the shopping list) then cut card shapes to fit inside the lid and base. I used a thickish card in the lid so it would allow pins to be stuck in it to hang my favourite pieces of vintage costume jewellery. In the bottom is the remains of a ‘do not bend’ envelope – see, being a hoarder of ‘useful’ things is finally paying off!

Using your card pieces for templates cut out your chosen fabric with an inch extra all around the edges.  Use the double sided tape on the back to secure the fabric in place folding in the corners as you go. Then add more double sided tape and I used little diamante glue blobs here and there to secure the card once it is pushed into place. Let it dry and that’s it you are done, now you can fill your box with, jewellery, a stash of candy or whatever treasures you want. I hope this has cheered you on this cloudy Wednesday, I hope to be back later with my Etsy four post xPainted Jewellery Box Project
