The first thing you see when you open your front door should not be a pile of trainers and various other junk that is needed in life, but not visually pleasing – muddy wellington boots – cardboard for recycling – furniture waiting for a new home – the list is long. We have been so busy just lately and the hallway instead of being a welcome home kiss on the cheek has become more of a slap in the face style dumping ground. No more. As punishment to myself (and whoever painted this whole house magnolia) I am posting the below picture, bare bulbs’n'all! With a huge tub of white paint (our house is looking more and more like a little sugar cube inside and out every day), a couple of tired old bits of furniture, a few junk shop finds and some help from my friends at Next I set to brightening this 5ft by 17.5ft central eyesore, so coming home is now a delight not a downer! The old white cupboard was painted inside and out with Annie Sloan paints, all our shoes and junk are hidden close at hand in the woven baskets and the memo board is a god send for a sieve brain like mine, what am I supposed to be doing Tuesday? Where are we going Saturday? Now we both know!I picked up some old pictures and frames from my favourite junk shop, the hand coloured duck in the gilt surround is so beautiful! Then the six things below are new but chosen to fit perfectly amongst our vintage finds. The colour palette was inspired by notions of our fresh cliff top air mixed with found beach glass and having a functional area combined with a place to display all the bits and pieces gathered on our country walks. The butterfly print and vase tie all the blues greens and browns together against the now fresh clean white walls. A nice surprise was the lovely warm glow cloche lamp gives through it’s lustre glass dome, and the Green ripple glass table lamp really brightens up the whole space, this is quite a dark room if any of the doors leading off are closed.I am so happy when I walk in now and can empty my pockets of pine cones, which are spilling over their new plate x
